Stop Doing It by Hand: Using AI to Build Production Automations in inDesign and Illustrator
Workshop
Most AEC marketers spend a painful amount of time on repetitive production work—populating templates, reformatting files, and compiling data into designed deliverables—when their real value is strategy and creative thinking. This session shows how AI tools like Claude, ChatGPT, and Copilot can act as a “pair programmer” for non technical professionals, guiding you step by step to build real, working automations for tools such as InDesign and Illustrator without writing code. You’ll see the full process in action, from identifying a repetitive task to describing it in plain language to an AI, iterating on the solution together, and deploying an automation that reliably saves time.
Instead of offering a single script to copy, the session teaches a repeatable methodology you can apply to many different workflows. Through live demo and a guided exercise, you’ll learn how to evaluate which tasks are strong automation candidates, frame problems so AI can generate useful code or instructions, and troubleshoot when the first version is imperfect. You’ll leave with at least one scoped automation idea from your own work, a draft AI “brief” you can use to start building, and the confidence to continue experimenting after the session—turning AI into a force multiplier for production, not a replacement for your expertise.
Learner outcomes
- Identify repetitive, templated production tasks in their own AEC marketing workflows that are strong candidates for automation.
- Use a plain language framework to describe an automation task to AI tools (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot) and iteratively refine the solution.
- Draft an AI-ready automation brief and a post-session action plan to begin building and deploying their first real production automation.
